Adult Autism and ADHD Assessments

Adult Autism and ADHD Assessments

Self-identification as neurodivergent is absolutely valid, and formal diagnosis may not feel necessary for many people, as well as being inaccessible for a lot of people.

However, for those who do want or need to go through a professional assessment, I can do this with you in a collaborative way that, whether or not you end up with a diagnosis, should help you to have a clearer understanding of yourself and your experiences.

I am trained and experienced in assessing adults for autism and ADHD, and can offer single or combined assessments. I particularly specialise in working with people who come to realise later in life that they may be neurodivergent, and those who are both autistic and ADHD.

  • If you come to me for an autism or ADHD assessment, we may decide to have an initial screening appointment to discuss the process, and if necessary to get authorisation from your insurer. Then we will arrange a number of appointments to complete the assessment, and I will also ask you to fill in some questionnaires. On the basis of this information, I will come to a conclusion about whether or not you meet the diagnostic criteria, and will tell you during our final assessment appointment. I will write a detailed report of the assessment, and if you have a received a diagnosis, I will also give you a brief “to whom it may concern” letter which you can use in situations where you need to provide confirmation of your diagnosis but don’t wish to share the full report. As part of the assessment, I will also offer a follow-up appointment for you to use as you wish, whether to reflect on the impact of your diagnosis, to discuss options for therapy or support, to answer questions that have arisen, or whatever you need.

  • I am insured to work with people ordinarily resident in the UK, and am a registered provider for BUPA, Modern Health and WPA. I also work with self-funding clients. A 50-minute appointment for pre-assessment screening or post-diagnostic support costs £120. A full assessment for autism, with a detailed report and a follow-up session, costs £1500. An ADHD assessment costs £1200. A joint assessment for both autism and ADHD costs £1800.

  • I have been working clinically with neurodivergent adults and children since 2001. I trained in autism assessment at the Institute of Child Health and Guy’s Hospital, and later completed my thesis research at UCL with autistic adults; I have published several papers in this area. Since qualifying I have continued to complete additional training in assessing for autism and ADHD and working clinically with neurodivergent adults, and have continued with this work throughout my career in the NHS, research and private practice. Most importantly, I continue to listen to the voices of neurodivergent people and to adjust my practice and my understanding of neurodivergence on the basis of what I learn.
